Dr. Matthew S.J. Katz, M.D is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon. He joined Nashville General Hospital in 2020 and in 2022 was named Medical Director of the Eye Center at Nashville General Hospital. In 2024, he was named Chief Medical Officer.
Dr. Katz earned his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and his ophthalmology residency at The Montefiore Medical Center - Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he also served as Chief Resident. During this time, he was twice awarded the Ronald M. Burde Award for Excellence in Resident research. Dr. Katz oversaw staffing needs for the ophthalmology clinics, directed residency assignments, supervised staffing needs of department ophthalmologists, organized grand rounds, and managed teaching programs of the department. He served as liaison to the office of GME and supervised disciplinary hearings.
Dr. Katz completed a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Bert M. Glaser at the National Retina Institute and joined Dr. Glaser in clinical practice for some years while he also managed and directed the research program of the National Retina Institute as he participated in clinical trials.
He is a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Surgeons, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Katz has served as a volunteer surgeon on medical missions within Africa, Southeast Asia, and South America.
