Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hospitalist, and will I still see my own doctor?
A hospitalist is a doctor who focuses only on caring for patients while they are in the hospital. During your stay, the hospitalist team manages your care in place of your regular doctor. We keep your primary care doctor informed and coordinate your care so everyone stays on the same page.
Who will follow up with me after I leave the hospital?
Before you go home, our team helps arrange your follow-up care. Our case managers and social workers can assist with scheduling appointments and connecting you to the right provider. If you don't have a primary care doctor, we'll help connect you with one. You'll leave with a clear plan for your next steps.
How will my primary care doctor know what happened during my stay?
When you're discharged, we prepare a detailed discharge summary that explains your diagnosis, any tests or procedures, medication changes, and recommended follow-up. This is shared with your primary care doctor so your care continues smoothly.
Can my family get updates about my care?
Yes, with your permission. We're glad to update your family on your diagnosis, treatment, and progress. If several family members are involved, we'll ask you to name one spokesperson, and for complex situations we can set up a family meeting with your care team.
What if I can't afford my medications or don't have insurance?
Let us know. Our case managers and social workers can help with medication costs, insurance questions, and access to care. When possible, we choose affordable medications and can provide some medications directly from our pharmacy before you leave.
When will I see the doctor each day?
Our team rounds at the bedside each morning, usually between 8:00 and 10:00. We provide updates during rounds and again any time something changes. Residents are available day and night if you or your family have questions.
