What Christy Smith Shared

Stewardship of Every Dollar
Smith described fiscal responsibility as a core duty — making sure every dollar, whether from patient revenue, federal funding, or local government, is put to work wisely. A clear financial plan, she said, is what lets NGH keep investing in the communities that rely on it most.

Focus on What NGH Does Best
No hospital can do everything. Smith emphasized building strong partnerships — with government agencies, private health systems, and community organizations — so patients get the right care, even when that means a referral beyond NGH. That focus lets Nashville General double down on what it does best: accessible, compassionate care for all Nashvillians.

Technology Upgrades
NGH recently completed a two-year rollout of a new Oracle-based electronic medical records system. The hospital has also improved its patient portal, HealtheLife™, making it easier for patients to connect with their care team and manage appointments online. The Board has asked leadership for a forward-looking technology plan to maximize investments in equipment and robotics.

Modernizing Spaces
Plans are underway to update the Emergency Department, patient rooms, and public spaces — improving comfort and staff workflow. The Board has also begun early conversations about renovating the current facility or eventually moving to a new one.

Investing in People
Staff retention is a priority. Smith highlighted the importance of reviewing pay and continuing workforce development. "This is an exciting time," she said. "If we can hold on through the transition, we'll be in an incredible place, and everyone will be proud to work at Nashville General Hospital."

Health Equity in Action
Smith highlighted NGH's community screenings and the Food Pharmacy — a program that addresses diet-related chronic conditions by connecting patients with healthy foods and nutrition education. It's a reminder that NGH isn't just a place people go when they're sick. It's a partner in keeping Nashville healthy.
