Nashville General's Dr. Ben Maliakkal Joins Belcourt Theatre for Screening of Sundance Documentary André Is an Idiot
A powerful film about one man's stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis — one that screening could have caught earlier — sparked an important conversation right here in Nashville. Nashville General Hospital was there for it.
A Sundance award-winning documentary about colorectal cancer made its Nashville debut at the Belcourt Theatre this spring — and Nashville General Hospital was part of the conversation. On April 8, following a screening of André Is an Idiot at the Belcourt, NGH gastroenterologist Dr. Ben Maliakkal led a post-film discussion on colorectal cancer screening and the options available right here in Nashville. The partnership brought a life-saving health message to one of the city's most beloved cultural spaces.
ABOUT THE FILM
André Is an Idiot follows André Riccardi, a man who received a cancer diagnosis he could have prevented. Directed by Tony Benna, the documentary blends raw, personal storytelling with humor to explore what it means to face a serious illness — and what happens when we put off the care we know we need. The film won recognition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival and played at the Belcourt, Nashville's nonprofit film center, April 3–8.
The April 8 evening screening included a special post-film conversation with Dr. Maliakkal on colorectal cancer screening — why it matters, how early detection saves lives, and what screening options are available through Nashville General Hospital.
WHY SCREENING MATTERS
Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early. When found at an early stage, it is also among the most treatable. Yet many people delay or avoid screening altogether — often because they don't know their options, feel nervous about the process, or simply haven't gotten around to it.
That's exactly the story at the heart of André Is an Idiot — and it's a story that plays out in real communities every day. Nashville General Hospital is committed to making sure Nashville residents have access to the screening they need, including options that are less invasive and easier to complete.
NGH SERVICES
Nashville General Hospital offers colorectal cancer screening through its Digestive Health (GI & Liver) services. NGH also offers SimpleScreen CRC, a blood-based colorectal cancer screening test available for eligible patients. Those who are eligible can come to NGH for a simple blood draw — no bowel prep required. Dr. Maliakkal and his team are available to help patients understand their options and find the screening approach that's right for them.
