All face masks are not created equal. Make sure yours works properly.
How do you know if your face mask or covering is working the way it should? Try blowing out a candle with your mask on. If you can’t blow out the candle, your mask is doing its job.
It seems like ages ago when we were asked to wear face masks or face coverings in public (and sometimes in our homes) to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Who would have thought that almost a year in, face masks have become a wardrobe staple and fashion statement? Color coordinate, anyone?
Whole businesses have sprung up to meet the demand and even famous designers have gotten into the act. So, with so many choices, what should you look for when buying a face mask? How do you choose the right one? Keep these tips in mind buying or making a face mask or covering.
- Layers are your friend. Your cloth or disposable mask should have two or more layers of washable or breathable fabric.
- It should comfortably cover your nose AND mouth. You don’t want to have to keep touching the mask to adjust it.
- Make sure there are no gaps on the sides and the fit is snug.
- If you wear glasses, choose a mask that fits closely over your nose or one with a nose wire to prevent fogging.
- One size does not always fit all. You want the mask to cover the nose and mouth, not your whole face.
- Consider avoiding masks that have built-in valves or vents. They could allow virus particles to escape.

One more thing before you put the mask on. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
