NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 11, 2025) — At its June 26 meeting, the Hospital Authority Board of Trustees elected new officers for Fiscal Year 2026. The appointments reflect the Board’s ongoing commitment to stable leadership, responsible governance, and equitable access to care for all Nashvillians—especially during a time of transition and renewed focus.

Ms. Christy Smith has been elected Hospital Authority Board Chair. Smith previously served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Finance Committee, where she played a key role in stewarding the hospital’s resources through a season marked by leadership changes and financial headwinds. A respected civic leader, Smith brings strong financial insight and a clear vision for Nashville General Hospital’s future.

“The past six months have not been without challenges, but we are emerging stronger, more focused, and deeply committed to the mission that anchors this hospital,” said Smith. “I’m honored to serve as Chair and excited about what lies ahead for Nashville General Hospital. With the continued dedication of our board, clinical teams, and staff, we are on the right path to a more stable and successful future for the patients and communities who rely on us.”

Mr. David Esquivel was elected Vice Chair. He currently chairs the CEO Search Committee, working with Metro to secure an executive search firm. His governance experience and legal expertise continue to add depth to the Board’s strategic direction.

Dr. Arie Nettles was re-elected Secretary for a second term. A retired professor and nationally recognized psychologist, she is known for her work in culturally responsive care and inclusive training models adopted by hospitals nationwide. She remains a trusted voice in equity and behavioral health.

The Hospital Authority Board also expressed its deep appreciation to outgoing Chair Dr. Raymond Martin for his steadfast leadership during a transformative year. Dr. Martin led the Board through a period of change, always keeping patient care and public trust at the forefront.

As Nashville General Hospital moves forward, the newly elected officers will lead with transparency, accountability, and a renewed focus on sustainable growth and system-wide stability—anchored in the hospital’s founding mission to serve all Nashvillians, without exception.
