Supporting Survivors: How NGH’s SANE Team Is Here for College Students This Fall

As students across Nashville return to campus this fall, the season is filled with excitement, new opportunities, and connections. But for some, it can also bring increased concerns about personal safety—particularly around sexual assault.

NGH Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program

At Nashville General Hospital, we want every student and parent to know: you are not alone, and help is always available.

Our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Team—the first of its kind in Nashville—has provided 30+ years of trauma-informed care to survivors of sexual assault and violence. Our specially trained nurse practitioners are on call 24/7, offering compassionate medical, forensic, and emotional support when it matters most.

Why SANE Care Matters

College-aged individuals, particularly women aged 18–24, face higher risks for sexual assault compared to other age groups. Women in this group are particularly vulnerable, with studies showing that 1 in 5 college women are sexually assaulted during their time at school.

Our program ensures survivors receive expert, sensitive care in a safe environment empowering them with support, evidence collection, and choices 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Services include:

  • Crisis intervention & advocacy
  • Forensic evidence collection
  • Injury documentation & photography
  • Medical treatment
  • Coordination with advocates & community partners
  • Facilitation of appropriate follow-up care

Key things to know:

  • No insurance required for SANE care.
  • You are not required to file a police report to receive a forensic exam.
  • Exams are available 24/7 in the NGH Emergency Department.
  • You may have an advocate or support person with you during care.

A Legacy of Advocacy

This work is powered in part by the Sandra Myers Fund, honoring Nashville’s first adult SANE. With community support, this fund helps expand services to improve survivor outcomes.

Community Partnerships

We work closely with trusted partners, including Our Kids for pediatric care, the Sexual Assault Center, and local hospitals, to ensure every survivor gets the care they deserve.

If you or someone you know experiences sexual assault, come to the NGH Emergency Department immediately or call 911. Our SANE team will meet you with the care, dignity, and advocacy you need to take your next steps toward healing.
